How many innocent children must be injured or killed before lawmakers decide to mandate guidelines and safety features for makers of household furniture? According to the U.S. Consumer Safety Commission (CPSC) there are an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 victims (children) treated in emergency rooms for injuries associated with toppling furniture accidents yearly. For my sons third birthday I had to visit his gravesite, take his favorite toys and flowers. As I stood there sobbing over his loss I vowed to make child furniture safety my primary mission in life. I promised to do everything in my power to prevent other families from going through the pain and suffering of loosing a child to soon. Mikeys Furniture Safety Foundation is determined to educate parents and lawmakers of the importance of furniture safety features and guidelines. If my child could not be safe in his own bedroom of childrens furniture, then he probably was not safe in other areas of the house as well. On Monday night at 8:30, March 25, 2002, two and a half year old Michael Jermaine Pooler II (Mikey) was getting potty trained. He went into his bedroom to grab a pull up out of his bottom drawer and happened to step inside his bottom dresser drawer. The dresser and TV toppled on top of Mikey causing craniocerebral blunt force trauma, crushing of his skull and hours later his death.Mikeys case is not an isolated one. Over 10, 000 children are injured or killed yearly due to furniture accidents. The psychological and physical effects of toppling injuries are often permanent on both children and families.
